A Basic Introduction to Missions

Missions is the task of bringing the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all of the peoples of the earth.

A brief introduction

  • The entirety of the Bible presents God's mission to redeem mankind.
  • After his death and resurrection, Jesus commissioned his followers to bring the Good News to the entire world.
  • In the 2,000 years since Christ, Christians have spread throughout the earth. Many have attempted to obey Jesus' command, but unfortunately many have not. Obedience to the Great Commission has thus been sporadic and partial.
  • Missions is about more than talking to your neighbor (although this is an important aspect of evangelism). Missions is about crossing difficult boundaries.
  • Today, some 2 billion people are completely out of touch with Christ, Christianity and the Gospel and have no chance to hear the Good News in their lifetime unless Christians intentionally leave their homes and cross boundaries of place, language and culture to bring them the Gospel.
